2017 Review of the Year

10.01.2018

As always at the end of a calendar year, a few of us gather to reflect on the year gone by and here are our top (good, bad and truly horrible) events of the year 2017.

There are many others and many more that didn’t make the final twenty.

So... in no particular order:

  1. Trump became the 45th President of the US
  2. The horrific and tragic Grenfell fire
  3. The Las Vegas mass shooting
  4. Harvey Weinstein... say no more
  5. On-going weapons testing in North Korea
  6. Brexit... still struggling to get over this!
  7. Prince Harry to marry Meghan Markle
  8. The Queen and Prince Philip celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary
  9. Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their third child
  10. In November, The Bank of England raises interest rates for the first time in 10 years, from 0.25 to 0.5%
  11. UK scientists edit the DNA of human embryos for the first time
  12. The Lake District becomes an officially recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site
  13. Terrorist attacks in London, Stockholm, Barcelona and Manchester
  14. Uber was deemed to be not fit and proper to operate in London
  15. The England under-20 football team won the World Cup...yes we won the World Cup! 1966 and 2017
  16. A tunnel will be built under Stonehenge
  17. Floyd Mayweather humiliated Conor McGregor and gave him a boxing lesson he won’t forget
  18. Chelsea were crowned champions
  19. Some of the famous who died this year included Christine Keeler (whose affair with Cabinet Minister John Profumo rocked British politics), music legends Fats Domino, Tom Petty and Chuck Berry; Hugh Hefner (founder of Playboy), Roger Moore (not the best James Bond ever but he is up there), from football Ugo Ehiogu (very premature death) and Graham Turnip Taylor (England Manager), Sir John Hurt (iconic actor) and of course Sir Bruce Forsyth (love him or hate him, he is an icon of British TV)
  20. Phil 'The Power' Taylor retired from darts (January 2018 to be fair) and still remains the most successful sportsperson of all time

And of course the biggest news of all... courtesy of Secret Santa, I became an honorific Lord – Yes Lord Rob Barlay LOL
